Support Networks
Support networks where relevant and accessible can go a long way towards consolidating progress you make in therapy between sessions, and will help you internalise the logic of new skills and techniques you pick up along the way.
In the 12 Step Fellowship for example, people generally have heard of the Big Two, namely Alcoholics Anonymous and Narcotics Anonymous , but there are a myriad of lesser known fellowships that provide tremendous support for those struggling with different types of addictive behaviour.
Websites like therecoveryvillage.com and sobernation.com give a comprehensive description of the range of addictions that are addressed , from Debtors Anonymous and Gamblers Anonymous to Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous and Online Gamers Anonymous.
Sufferers of eating disorders are also well resourced in these fellowships as are family members affected by other members of their familiy’s addiction. From CoDA and Al Anon to Adult Children of Alcoholics.
The broad sweep of these support groups should not be seen to dilute or denigrate the massive service they provide to people who need support and human contact and company.
For those dealing with issues outside of addiction, there are often resources who are extremely well placed to complement therapy and provide support for those in need.
The National Association for People Abused in Childhood (NAPAC) is the UK’s leading national charity offering support to adult survivors of all types of childhood abuse, including physical, sexual and emotional abuse and neglect.
There are many local support groups for all manner of issues flagged up on www.psychologytoday.com – simply search for the issue concerning you and see what is available.
And podcasts have proved enormously helpful and insightful for millions suffering from everything from anxiety to bereavement.
Griefcast with Cariad Lloyd is one great example of a tool people use to help them deal with the loneliness and sheer pain of losing a person or pet.
Clients are also encouraged to build support networks wherever they can, and to create links with friends and family members who are sympathetic to what they are trying to do with their lives.
