ABOUT ME
David Yates MSc MBACP
I am a Registered Member (MBACP number 098761) of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and hold their Certificate of Proficiency. I adhere to the BACP Ethical Framework for the Counselling Professions which promotes a code of Good Practice, including Continued Professional Development , consistent supervision, working to professional standards and taking care of one’s mental and physical health as a practitioner. I also see my therapist on a weekly basis and so understand how it feels on the client’s side of the room.
MY PRACTICE
My aim is to create a warm, welcoming environment where you feel humanised, listened to and understood. I commit to helping you facilitate the changes you would like to make.
I am an integrative therapist combining person centred and psychodynamic techniques to enable me to be open and help you find your voice.
I don’t want you to stand still and my own progress is dedicated to being the best therapist I can be for you.
MY BACKGROUND
Before retraining I worked as a television producer/director making 30 health and fitness and sports films around the world with Olympic gold medallists, athletes, premiership footballers and Grand Slam tennis players, which got me interested in coaching and the mental approach of the top 1% of athletes and leaders around the world. They are obsessive, intriguing people !
What it certainly trained me in was staying calm with challenging, demanding human beings at the top of their game. And I have translated that into staying human with clients in deep water and challenging times.
I also made many films on health and well being, from yoga and pilates, from mindfulness to breathing. I have been involved in the mind/body connection movement for the last 20 years also , and trained as a shiatsu massage therapist with the London College of Shiatsu.
My belief that often stress in the body can trigger mental distress helps many issues that have troubled clients in their lives previously.
And I began my working life as a DJ in the fashion industry providing soundtracks for many fashion shows, designers and photographers. The way that I planned the shows with designers allowed me much creative licence that I have adhered to through all my professional life – looking to present my work in varied formats that are creative and accessible.
"David has been really supportive of me through a tough time in my life; made even tougher because of COVID and lockdowns. He continues to help me find small ways to be grateful and have different perspectives on issues that I face, and is a steady and stabilising figure in my week. His approach is characterised by flexibility and integrity, and I'd highly recommend working with him."
